BEFORE COACHINGLinda promised I would have the best year of teaching ever. I was stuck in a rut of teaching the same thing the same way. I used the textbook too much and did not feel successful.
NOWBecause I share more with my students and am more positive, I became more of a human instead of just a teaching teacher. I smile more and am totally relaxed and confident. The greatest gift to my students is my smile. Last winter I wrote individual Christmas cards to each student, sharing something positive about how I see them. I then allowed them to write cards to family and friends. The atmosphere was positively energized. ALSO - My seventh grade students are more comfortable with fractions because of how I approach teaching. In the past I never explained how one skill was used to build the next. Students had more "AHA" moments and my job was more effective by aligning and clarifying goals and objectives with classroom practices. I spent a lot of time explaining how we are a team and how saying "I can do it!" increased positive atmosphere. I seldom hear "I can't do this!" or "This is too hard!" Students take more risks and have more confidence and success. Linda IS a curriculum design and alignment expert! CB
STUDENT's perceptions of teachers in coaching!
"A lot has changed in class. It is more positive and relaxing. I can ask questions and not feel stupid. I am paying more attention and having fun and want to learn! You (teacher) seem happier, make sure we understand, and are happier!"
"Patience is the main difference I have noticed. You (teacher) are nicer and are using new methods other than bookwork. You explain how math can be used in real life. Math is important, but you have also opened our eyes to advice. We have been able to see that time is not to be wasted and life is to be enjoyed! You have been a LOT more encouraging both in math and life!!!"
BEFORE COACHINGI knew I needed to do something to really connect with ALL of my students. I have 70% migrant population with families that speak no English. I felt frustrated about teaching and student learning, in my second year as a teacher after many years off. I was having management and time organization, not to mention clutter issues!
NOWI have implemented a cultural diversity unit with Linda's help. I had letters translated into Spanish, and every child and family was engaged. My students and their families KNOW I care about their education! My students are MUCH more positive and engaged in learning now. My space and student's desks are tidy and we all share great classroom values! MB
BEFORE COACHINGI was afraid of what students thought about my teaching. I would NOT risk being hurt.
NOWI have overcome fear and taken down walls. I stand my ground with students and even ask students, "What have you learned, what could I do to improve?" I am a better teacher and relationship problem solver who is more productive and caring. I am unafraid to reach out to students. CB
BEFORE COACHINGI NEVER exercised during the school year. Family, friends, my home, church, and professional development were ALL a fleeting thought. I could not attend to everything and feel good about it all!
NOWI am working on new habits of organization and time management to fit everything into my schedule. By prioritizing daily, weekly, and monthly tasks, I am consistently able to accomplish everything I have to do, and I HAVE peace of mind! MB
BEFORE COACHINGI wanted to go back to school and grow professionally. I had little motivation to take all the steps necessary to be able to go back to school and add ONE more thing to my schedule.
NOWI have gone through a ton of training and moved up in my current position, and I am ready to go back to school any time. Linda really has a handle on what is expected when someone wants to further his or her education. I have the time and confidence to move forward! DD
BEFORE COACHINGI had NO confidence and wanted positive feedback from my Principal and peers. I felt limited and frustrated because I did not fit in with "the group," and often felt they were talking behind my back.
NOWI have a new positive attitude and seek the confidence I need from my relationship with Christ. I have new habits of praying first and then seeking assistance from others. Peers have noticed and commented that I AM more confident, and that was my goal! MB
BEFORE COACHINGI read Scriptures daily and even prayed, but did not expect answers to my prayers. I was afraid of my Heavenly Father.
NOWI have new habits of a reverent fear of God, who loves me, and great expectations that He wants to hear and answer my prayers. Reading Scriptures and praying effectively have totally transformed my views of life and education. I want to transition out of the classroom and into counseling or adult education, and KNOW I can do "All things through Christ, who strengthens me!" DW
Linda has always been a leader in integrating cross-curricular lessons with other content area teachers. She got the whole group (health, science, history, and language arts) working collaboratively to come up with a unit on cycles. We worked on weather, human, history, and writing cycles. Students were able to see how ALL cycles have something in common even though they may be very different!
