I UNDERSTAND
~ I was in my seventh year of teaching. It was a difficult year with difficult students. Our school was not meeting Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) for the second year, and the pressure to perform was extreme. We had approximately 50% migrant population who traveled for 30-60 days during the school year, and at least 95% free and reduced lunch eligibility. I was exhausted and using material out of the text books, with minimal success. With ZERO motivation, I just wanted to get by. I was totally burned out and ready to quit!My first defining moment was when a colleague and friend said, "Have you considered a Master's program? A couple of us are participating in an online program, and it has changed our attitudes completely!" Two months later, in June, I started my Master's program and started back teaching, in August, totally energized, focusing on those things I COULD change! As a result, I had the best year ever, NO discipline problems, and was meeting the needs of ALL of my students! I was applying all the learning about incorporating lessons focused on different learning styles and multiple intelligences. I was NO longer focusing on things I could not change.
